SGaanaGwa is a compelling collaboration exploring the Haida Worldview of a Supernatural landscape through traditional Haida music interwoven with influences from jazz, blues, folk and rock. SGaanaGwa is a Haida culture and language project of award-winning singer Terri-Lynn Williams-Davidson, legendary musicians Bill Henderson and Claire Lawrence of the acclaimed rock band Chilliwack. They are supported by Western Canadian Music Awards 2019 Jazz Artist of the Year bassist Jodi Proznick and renowned vocalists Saffron Henderson and Camille Henderson.

SGaanaGwa will open the evening main stage show at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival on Sunday, July 17.

Ms Williams-Davidson will be providing a different take on restorative justice for the 10th Annual Campagnolo Lecture. Her lecture will bring together the multiple areas in which she works (law, writing, visual arts, music, environmental justice, Haida language and culture preservation). All of these endeavours are incorporated in her approach to Restorative Justice, with many lessons for a diverse community in how Restorative Justice can be applied across many fields. Her presentation will primarily focus on her work in the areas of law and music.

Join us at the gallery for a special children's book launch with Terri-Lynn Williams Davidson. There will be a reading from the book, a book signing and other family fun activities.

Based on ancient Haida narratives, this vibrantly illustrated children’s book empowers young people and teaches them to live in harmony with nature.

Haida Gwaii is home to a rich and vibrant culture whose origins date back thousands of years. Today, the Haida People are known throughout Canada and the world for their artistic achievements, their commitment to social justice and environmental protection, and their deep connection to the natural world. Embedded in Haida culture and drawn from ancient oral narratives are a number of Supernatural Beings, many of them female, who embody these connections to the land, the sea, and the sky. Magical Beings of Haida Gwaii features ten of these ancient figures and presents them to children as visually engaging, empowering, and meaningful examples of living in balance with nature. Developed by renowned Haida activist, lawyer, performer, and artist Terri-Lynn Williams-Davidson and Haida educator Sara Florence Davidson, this book challenges stereotypes, helps advance reconciliation, and celebrates Indigenous identity and culture.

Join us Tuesday, October 22, 6 to 8 pm for the opening celebration of Out of Concealment - Female Supernatural Beings of Haida Gwaii!

The Vancouver premiere of the solo exhibition by Terri-Lynn Williams-Davidson is an innovative re-imagining of supernatural beings from Haida Gwaii mythology. Curated by Beth Carter, in consultation with Nika Collison, Out of Concealment foregrounds an Indigenous ethos of environmentalism by honouring the power and sexuality of Indigenous women—inherent values that were disrupted and suppressed by colonization.

Terri-Lynn Williams-Davidson performs with Bill Henderson and Claire Lawrence. The trio are joined by Jodi Proznick on bass, and Saffron Henderson and Camille Henderson on background vocals.
